NOTES ON THE WRITING OF THE AVAR LANGUAGE OF THE PRE-ISLAMIC PERIOD

UDK: 811.351.12

Pages: 10 - 13

The most ancient of the extant experiments in the written fixation of the Avar speech are the well-known bilin-guals – bilingual inscriptions on stone crosses and slabs. The first experiments in the written recording of the Avar speech were associated with the penetration of Christianity into Dagestan. Many achievements of the Christian religion and culture became also the property of the Avar people. One of the manifestations of this process is the presence of traces of the existence of the Georgian script in the medieval history. Ignoring the hypothesis of the existence of elements of the Georgian script among the Avars at a certain stage of historical development, in our opinion, does not contribute to an objective, scientific coverage of the problems of the de-velopment of the Avar script.

Keywords: the Dagestan languages, the Avar language, formation and development of writing, pre-Islamic period.
