In the first decades of Soviet power, the Avar literature was undergoing the process of formation and development of the novel and its genre varieties. One of the first national masters of the word who turned to a new prose genre in his work was the famous linguist, writer and educator Sh. I. Mikailov, the author of the unfinished social novel “Rust”, which reached the reader in the form of an excerpt from it. The article attempts to give a literary-critical assessment of this passage, to determine its artistic features and genre-compositional originality.
